Climbing Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet), is considered the ultimate challenge for mountaineers. Since Avtar Singh Cheema's pioneering climb in 1965, many Indian climbers, both men and women, have followed in his footsteps, breaking records and setting benchmarks. This includes achievements by individuals like Bachendri Pal and Anshu Jamsenpa, who paved the way for future generations. Climbers from the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, and civilian adventurers have all contributed to India's rich legacy in Himalayan mountaineering.

Several Indian mountaineers have successfully summited Mount Everest, with the first being Avtar Singh Cheema in 1965. Below is an overview of notable Indian climbers:

1. Avtar Singh Cheema (1965)

  • First Indian to Summit Everest: Avtar Singh Cheema led the Indian Army expedition and became the first Indian to reach the summit on May 20, 1965. His achievement was a milestone in India's mountaineering history.

2. Bachendri Pal (1984)

  • First Indian Woman to Summit Everest: Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest on May 23, 1984. Her success encouraged many Indian women to take up mountaineering.

3. Arjun Vajpai (2010)

  • Youngest Indian to Climb Everest: At the age of 16 years and 11 months, Arjun Vajpai summited Mount Everest in 2010, becoming one of the youngest climbers in the world to achieve this feat.

4. Anshu Jamsenpa (2011, 2013, 2017)

  • Record Holder for Multiple Ascents: Anshu Jamsenpa from Arunachal Pradesh holds the record for being the first woman in the world to summit Everest twice in a season, achieving this in 2017. She has summited Everest five times in total.

5. Santosh Yadav (1992, 1993)

  • First Woman to Summit Twice: Santosh Yadav became the first woman to successfully climb Mount Everest twice (1992 and 1993), inspiring generations of women mountaineers in India.
