Best Time for Everest base camp trekking 

SUMMER

During summer (June, July and August) the minimum temperature along the highest point of the trek is around 0°c and it is one of the most favorable seasons to trek to EBC but as the monsoon coincides with summer in Nepal you must carry appropriate gears for a pleasant experience. 

Winter

During winter (December, January and February) the EBC region receives minimum amount of rainfall and heavy snowfall. This season offers most scenic views of the snowcapped mountains. The temperature decreases to -20°c and most of the trekking routes are closed because of heavy snowfall this is why winter trekking to EBC is not very popular. 

 Autumn

Itinerary for Everest base camp trek for Indians

  • Day 1 - Kathmandu Arrival

On Day 1, you will arrive at Kathmandu and you will be preparing yourself for your trekking adventure. You will be introduced with your trekking guide who will explain about your entire trekking journey in brief. Your guide will check whether you have all the required trekking equipment or not and if needed, will ask you to purchase any missing equipment.

  • Day 2 - Phakding trekking (2652 meters)

After having your breakfast, your journey will start from Tribhuvan International Airport. From there you will be heading towards Lukla by flight. After flying for about 35 minutes, you will land at Lukla airport where you will be received by our team. Then your Phakding trekking for an altitude of 2652 meters from the ground level begins. The 3.5 hours long trekking adventure will drive you through the green mountain ranges and small villages. As arranged by our team, you will be staying at tea house at night.

  • Day 3 - Namche Bazaar trekking (3440 meters)

On Day-3, you will be trekking to a height of 3440 meters to reach your next trekking spot – Namche Bazaar where you will see green mountains and famous  Dudh Koshi River.For lunch, you will be stopping at Monjo. The route that leads you from Monjo to Namche is flanked by thick green forest cover. Be ready to get the glimpses of Lhotse and Everest mountain ranges.Your overnight stay is arranged either at Mountain Lodge or Tea House.

  • Day 4 - Namche Acclimatization (3440 meters)

Day 4 is entirely reserved for acclimatization at the Namche Bazaar, where you have abundant restaurants, café’s, bars, and other things to do. You can explore the Namche museum and Namche monasteries.

  • Day 5 - Tengboche Trekking (3860 meters)

A quaint small village of Tengboche is situated at an altitude of 3860 meters from the base camp.The monastery here, Tengboche Monastery, is a very famous and worth visiting monastery in town.Your total trekking duration will last for around 5 hours.

  • Day 6 - Dingboche (4360 meters)

For today, you will be trekking in the direction of the Pangboche Village to get the views of Mount Ama Dablam.You might likely have your lunch here. Later, your trek will proceed in the direction of Pheriche and Imja Valley, respectively.Before taking a steep hike to Dingboche, you can capture some scenic vistas of the Lobuche River.At the end of day 6 trek, you will be retiring for the day at the Dingboche campsite.

  • Day 7 - Dingboche Acclimatization (4360 meters)

Your day 7 is entirely reserved for acclimatization at Dingboche base camp.If possible, we will undertake minor trekking adventures to Mount Makalu, Mount Lhotse, Mt. Cho Yo, and several other peaks and mountain ranges.Your overnight stay will be arranged at the Dingboche hotel.

  • Day 8 - Thukla/Dughla trekking (4620 meters)

Dughla trekking adventure is the shortest experience on your Everest Base Camp Trek From India.In comparison with the rest of the days, you will be trekking for a lesser duration today. Thus, you can enjoy some of the best scenic views of your trekking expedition.As you trail from Dingboche to Dughla, you can see a glacial lake and a Mount Pumori on your right-hand side.If you want, you can rest for some time either by the side of the Dudh Koshi river of Khumbu glacier.Your overnight stay is arranged at the Tea House or Mountain Lodge campsite.

  • Day 9 - Trek from Lobuche to Gorakhshep (17,201ft)

Embark on a trek from Lobuche to Gorakhshep after an early breakfast. Along the way, take the time to appreciate the breathtaking landscape.

  • Day 10 - Gorakshep-Everest Base Camp-Gorakshep Trekking (5170+5364 meters)

On day 10, you will be entirely trekking through the glacier route with a moderate level of difficulty.As you start trekking, you will now be able to get glimpses of Mount Everest. However, you cannot see it entirely from the Base Camp. Whereas, the Khumbu icefall is evidently visible. This portion of your trekking adventure is a roller coaster one where you will be trespassing several glaciers and vast mountain ranges.So, on day 10, you can expect a total trek of 5 to 7 hours a long duration before retiring for the day at Gorak Shep camping site.

  • Day 11 - Kala Pattar Trekking (5645 meters) and Pheriche Descending (4940 meters)

This day will be your most thrilling and challenging part of your entire trekking expedition. You will be hiking to Kala Patthar which won’t be easy.  In fact, this is the only spot from where you can adore all the high peaks spread across the hilly regions of the Himalayan Ranges. Within a span of 2.5 to 3 hours, you will be able to cover the entire trekking distance between Gorak Shep to Kala Pattar. Once you are done reaching Kala Patthar, the next portion of your trekking expedition will be descending down the trail, thereby easing your trekking experience. With the next 3 hours of dedicated trekking, you will gain a new height of 4940 meters to reach Lobuche. If every single trekker within your group agrees, we can even plan a small trek to the Pheriche too.

  • Day 12 - Namche Bazaar Trekking

Your day 12 trekking will be a moderate one. After reaching Phungi Thanga and before Tengboche, we will have to hike a bit.

  • Day 13 - Lukla Trekking (2800 meters)

Day 13 is the last day of your Kumbhu trekking expedition. Although not a tough one, your Lukla trekking will seem to be a moderately severe trekking experience.

  • Day 14 - Kathmandu Trekking

On day 14, we will lead you to the Airport to board Kathmandu flight. Throughout the 35 minutes of flying, you can enjoy the scenic vistas of Kathmandu's natural beauty. The 14th day is entirely reserved as a day at leisure where you can retire for the day either at a hotel or a guest house.

  • Day 15 – Farewell to Kathmandu

It is good to start your day early in the morning and check-out by noon. We will drop you at the airport from where you can catch a respective flight to fly back to your hometown.

As you will gain a lot of altitude and also walk for several hours a day you need to pack warm, multi-layered and comfortable clothing. Here are the lists of clothing that you need to have on your trek to Everest Base Camp.
  • Breathable Underwear
  • As the Everest Base Camp is a long days trek and you will need to walk for 4-8 hours every day where your body will accumulate lot of sweat. In such case underwear will be usable only up to 3 days and it starts to smell after that. So you will need to carry 4-5 pair moisture wicking and breathable underwear.
  • Base Layer
  • Base layer will be very effective during the lower temperatures. It makes you feel warmer and more comfortable by reducing the airflow. You will need to carry 2 top and 1 bottom base layer for your trek to Everest Base Camp.
  • Insulation Layer
  • Insulation layer is the layer of clothing that you wear outside the Base layer. Wearing layered clothing helps to keep the warm air trapped between the layers and makes you feel warmer than single layer clothing. An insulation layer for your torso would be enough.
  • Third Layer
  • Third layer consists of warm waterproof jackets and trousers which is one of the most important layers of clothing. The third layer is the most costly layer of clothing and also the one that lasts the longest. A pair of Jackets and Trousers would be enough for Everest Base Camp Trek.

  • Trekking Trousers and Shorts

A pair of trekking trousers and shorts would be enough. It will be necessary for trekking in lower altitude where the temperature is moderate.

  • Trekking Shirts

Buy trekking shirts that have long and short sleeves and is breathable and light weighted. Nylon, merino or quick drying polyester will be ideal. Try to avoid cotton shirts as they observe sweat quickly and may be discolor very soon. A total of 5 trekking shirts would be enough for Everest Base Camp Trek.

Waterproof Shell Jacket and Trousers are a must in any seasons. There is frequent rainfall during summer and small rainfall during any season. One pair of waterproof Shell Jacket and Trousers would be enough.

  • Hiking Socks

Buy 5-6 pair of breathable hiking socks for Everest Base Camp Trek. Avoid cotton socks as they aren’t good choice for hiking shoes.

  • Warm Thermal Socks

You must take a warm sleeping bag with you. If you are trekking during winter it is extremely cold and the temperature sometimes reaches to -20°C. So take a warm sleeping bag that provides you extra insulation to have a warm sleep at night.

  • Trekking Towel

  • Water Purification Tablets

Most of the health problem arises due to unpurified water. You might get infected by consuming water directly from the resources and bottled mineral water adds the problem of waste management in Everest Base Camp so if you have a water purification tablet you can purify the water by yourself and consume it along the trek.

To prevent from Acute Mountain Sickness you need to bring a Diamox as per the prescription of your doctor. It helps to prevent onset altitude sickness.

Permits and Fees in the Everest Region:

  1. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

Sagarmatha National Park entry permit fee costs 3,000 NPR + 13% VAT, totaling 3,390 NPR (Approx. US $34) for foreigners where as it costs 1,500 NPR for people from SAARC countries.

  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Fee

The people of Solukhumbu district have started levying entrance fee of Rs 2,000 (approximately $20) on every foreigner entering the rural municipality. People of every nation outside Nepal should pay the fee.

  • TIMS permit: 2,000 NPR (Approx. US $20)

Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS Card) is mandatory to ensure the safety and security of trekkers in the general trekking areas. Travel insurance is essential to acquire permission for trekking in Nepal and for obtaining the TIMS Card.
